John A. Bryan, II, BA, DVM, CIVT, MS

Dr. Bryan is a native Georgian (U.S.) who received his Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree (Political Science) from Emory University in 1991, his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) and Certificate in International Veterinary Medicine (CIVT) from the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine (UGA CVM) in 2007, and his Master of Science (MSc) (Veterinary Pathology), also from the UGA CVM, in 2009. From 2007 to 2009, Dr. Bryan received training as a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the UGA CVM Southeastern Cooperative Wildlife Disease Study (SCWDS).

In 2009 Dr. Bryan left SCWDS to serve as a Wildlife Veterinarian/Veterinary Medical Officer with United States National Park Service (NPS) where he established the inaugural NPS Wildlife Animal Welfare Program, served as Director of the NPS Veterinary Diagnostic Service, and as a Field Veterinarian.

In 2014, Dr. Bryan left the NPS and returned to SCWDS faculty as a Public Service Assistant where he served on the SCWDS Diagnostic Service, directed the SCWDS Controlled Substance Program, oversaw the SCWDS Veterinary Extern Program, and coordinated the Invasive Species & Feral Swine Programs.

In 2018, Dr. Bryan left SCWDS to establish Zachery Consulting, LLC, where he currently works as a Freelance Wildlife Veterinarian specializing in Wildlife Animal Welfare, Wildlife Disease, and Wildlife Veterinary Education and Training.

Dr. Bryan has held numerous administrative positions in the wildlife veterinary profession, including having served as Chair of The Wildlife Society Wildlife Diseases Working Group, President of the American Association of Wildlife Veterinarians, Chair and again as Co-Chair of the American Society of Mammalogists (ASM) Animal Care and Use Committee and ASM Member Organization Delegate to the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care, International (AAALAC, Int.). He also serves as an Ad-Hoc Consultant with AAALAC, Int. In addition to these endeavors, Dr. Bryan has served on and/or chaired numerous Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees (IACUCs) with academic, federal, state, and private sector (several international non-governmental organizations) entities.

Having lived and/or worked in the Sahel and Sub-Saharan regions of Africa; e.g., Cameroon, Chad, and Gabon, Dr. Bryan is fluent in French and has garnered years of experience in the region; from the village level to the ministerial.
